It's Important

to make music and to travel and to quiet the testy, judgmental beats of your heart gone wrong.

Disappointing

are the accoutrements of modern life.

For example, I ordered two memory cards for my new camera.  They were due to arrive this Wednesday, but still haven't shown up.  I don't necessarily think that my life until Monday will be so unmemorable/astonishing that photographic evidence will be warranted, but still.  You'd like to think that Amazon's delivery timeframe is something you could hold onto in these hectic days.

Meanwhile, it's been quite a week.  Work is sapping the very life force out of me.  Luckily, massages are subsidized.  And I refuse to say no to anything.  I understand that 2009 might be, wildly, some kind of last chance to change the entire flow of my life.  "FWIW".  And so they tell me.

Tonight we watched the debates at, of all places, the 4040 club.  It was unabashedly tacky, with awkward piled-up layers of cushions everywhere and cramped interstitial spaces.  I guess the only way to bear it would be if it were so packed that discomfort would be a given.

I can't even get excited about a Lyell sample sale any more.  I'm broke.
I can't go to Buenos Aires on a whim.  Necessarily.
I can't attach any importance to flirtation.
I watch The Hours and I think about artists that I love.  David Foster Wallace.  Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore.  Glenn Gould.  Diane Sawyer.  Scott Schuman.  Elizabeth Peyton.  Raf Simons.

My heart drops in my chest, and my whole body aches at the prospect of exciting times to come.

Disappointments and Wonder

I got my new camera recently and hoping that was a great idea!
Disappointing, though, because there were so many photo-worthy moments to today.  And I didn't bring it out, because the pathetic 32 MB memory card that it came with can hold, like, 8 pics.

So what will never be recorded for posterity during this, the most Brooklyn of Brooklyn days:
  • The vibrant, dusky voice of Mamie Minch at Barbes (well, I said camera, not tape recorder, although it can take video)
  • Sitting on an abandoned IKEA futon on Fifth Avenue
  • The astonishing sight of the Satori Condos in the Gowanus
  • The absence of the dairy people at the farmers' market
  • Me, sweating up a storm in the hottest day in recent recollection
  • The gorgeous label of Ephemere Apple beer
  • Bluegrass night at Kili
I yearn for cooler days.

My Favorite New York Skyscraper

I do love the Chrysler Building like most people, but I adore the white clock tower building near Union Square.

I had no idea what it was called.  An architect-y friend promised to find out but I hadn't heard back.  You can see it clearly from the window of Ning's new apartment.  He said he thought it was a Met Life building - I couldn't believe it.

It's so friendly and useful.  A village clock.

Four Day Week!

Goodbye, summer!

Over the weekend, I bought a delightful white straw hat, which does in fact seem strange to wear after today. So I might not.

In the meantime, I have about four months before school starts. I feel pretty beset by the challenges of errands I need to run in order to accomplish being an MBA student. I don't dare do them. But I've got it all completely under control.
